CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

Presently the Department of Chemistry has three well equipped laboratories. Instruments are mainly used in practical classes by the students; few of them are also used in minor research projects by the faculty members.
The department has following Instrumental facilities:
Spectophotometer (Systronics-105, purchased from CSIR-grant): 1 pcs.
Spectrophotometer is an instrument by which we measure absorption and transmittance of monochromatic light in terms of ratio or a function of the ratio, of the radiant power of the two beams as a functional of spectral wave length. Here the range is 40 – 960 nm.
Conductivity meter (Systronics)-1pcs, (Equiptronics)-2pcs.
We use this electrical conductivity meter to measure the electrical conductivity of an electrolytic solution.
Potentiometer (Equiptronics) -2pcs.
A potentiometer is an instrument for measuring the potential (voltage) in a circuit.
Polarimeter -1pcs.
Polarimetry measures the rotation of polarized light as it passes through an optically active fluid. The measured rotation can be used to calculate the value of solution concentrations; especially substances such as sugars, peptides and volatile oils.
Mechanical shaker -1pcs.
A shaker is a device used in our chemistry laboratory to stir liquids.
Centrifuge: 1 pcs
Centrifuge is an instrument which involves the application of the centripetal force for the sedimentation of heterogeneous mixtures in laboratory settings. We use this process to separate two immiscible substances.
Chemical (analytical) Balance: 21 pcs.
Chemical (analytical) balances are instruments used for precise determining mass of matter. There are analytical balances with a capacity of 100 g and a sensitivity of 0.1 mg in the department.
Digital top pan balance: 4 pcs.
Digital analytical balance (accuracy up to third/fourth decimal of mg) is used for experiments on inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry.
Micro-oven: 2 pcs.
This has a wide range of application such as drying of glass apparatus, heating a chemical reaction etc.
Suction pump with büchner funnel: 1 pcs
A büchner funnel is a piece of laboratory equipment which is used to filter or separate a liquid from a solid attached with a suction pump.
