The department of Microbiology, Rabindra Mahavidyalaya started to roll on 2nd August 2002 with 16 students. Initially the course was self financed under Burdwan University with one contractual full time faculty Dr. Soumendra Nath Chatterjee, Ph.D and some other teacher from other departments like Zoology and Botany. As there was no separate room earmarked for the department, Laboratory Classes used to be taken in other departments until separate space was allotted in 2003. This was because of the whole infrastructure which was supposed to be erected by the fund collected through tuition fees from the students. From the year 2010 the self finance status has been changed into General course. Then onwards, department got a good number of students in every year (which is indeed due to reduction in tuition fees). The department now possesses two well equipped Laboratories (equipment such as  Phase Contrast Microscope, UV visible Spectrophotometer, Cold Centrifuge and -200C Refrigerator) and separate class room with two Government Approved Part Time Teacher Mr. Tanmay Ghosh, M.Sc and Mr. Joidip Ghosh, M.Sc along with a Laboratory Instructor Mr. Nayem Ahmad Khan and casual staff Mr. Prakas Bhaskar.  The faculties take some efforts to improve the performance of the students like class test, mock test for practical etc. 53 students were enrolled in the department in 2015. The department has produced first class first and first class second in the University examination, 2015.
